Amateur Radio Examinations in LA and Beyond The actual licensing test is not administered by the FCC anymore. Teams of volunteer examiners are accredited by one of 14 Volunteer Examiner Coordinators (VEC). LA is served by three VECs. In the LA area, exams are available almost every week at various locations. Often there are two or three exams in various LA area locations. The ARRL is a national nonprofit VEC and has the most VE teams in LA, see: http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml This VEC charges $14 to cover administrative expenses of its fulltime staff. W5YI is a commercial vendor of licensing books and videos which has a VEC. It has one VE team in LA, in San Pedro, see: http://www.w5yi.org/exam_locations_ama.php W5YI charges $14 as well. The Greater LA Amatuer Group (GLARG) normally has locations in Northridge, Santa Clarita, and Long Beach, see: http://www.glaarg.org/ This is a grassroots VEC with no full-time staff, that still charges the same $4 fee when the VE program began in 1984. If you take a course, most instructors arrange for an exam at the end. Keep in mind not all exams may be posted on this database. Local clubs often know about local exams. Hint - visit the Practice Ham Exam and take a practice ham. When you consistently pass th practice exam, which is made up of questions form the actual test bank, you will be ready for the actual exam. |
